Karting is an amazing sport. How many sports can you start at age 5 and still be doing into your 70s? And girls compete on level playing field with boys. Such is karting. Karting is a true family sport. Many fathers/mothers and sons/daughters have built a close family relationship by being together at the track each weekend. Many older fathers go to the track and race with their sons. Racers grow to be a family, helping and supporting each other.
Driving a kart fast is just an amazing feeling. The G-forces of the corners, the high speeds going down the straightaway, making a hairpin pass in a corner…. It is quite a rush! The competition is head to head and often intense, winners and losers being separated by a thousandth of a second.
Karting builds character. Racing has its highs and many lows. If your kart has a mechanical failure you are out of the race. This can happen when you were winning the race. Dealing with these highs and lows is not easy. For a young person, it really teaches them the value of patience and what it means to overcome adversity. These are life lessons that will stay with them for life. It also challenges your mind. It builds your mechanical and mathematics skills.
My son and I started racing when he was age 5. This will be our thirteenth season. It has brought us close together. We often get an odds at the track and deal with the frustration of racing incidents, but we have always stuck together and worked as a team. As a father, no amount of money in the world could replace the great experiences I have shared with my son.
So, why not check karting out. If you are a parent, consider this instead of football, basketball, baseball, and other traditional sports. Those sports you are spectator. With karting you will be actively engaged. Get into karting, not to be the next NASCAR driver, but for fun and challenge offered by this sport. The fun is found in the friendships that develop, the quality time that families spend. The challenge lies in developing the knowledge, skill and expertise necessary to setup and drive a competitive racing. If you are older this can give you a great hobby that will get you out and keep you young.
While karting is not the cheapest sport to pursue, it can be done economically. Briggs LO206 engines have provided a low-cost entry point. You can often get great deals on used equipment to get you started.
